Discovering Off-Road Faith
Have you ever thought that life would be so much easier if you could plan for every detail of what you went through in life? I have often thought it would be nice to know what to expect, especially with the things that hit you out of nowhere. Times when your life takes an uncertain turn down a path you never saw coming. It can feel like you spend more time on the roads less traveled than the more pleasurable ones you plan for. Faith can feel distant when you are walking through challenging valleys. It can feel as if you are walking under grey skies, while everyone else travels along roads under blue ones, with more seemingly scenic views.
I have been learning some tough lessons. You can’t plan every detail of your life. That’s a hard truth—especially for those of us who like to hold the map tightly, tracing out every turn before we take a step. We want control, certainty, and smooth roads ahead.
But life doesn’t always follow our plans.
Hard things have a way of finding us. No matter how carefully we map it out, there are moments when life takes us off-road—away from the neat, tidy path we imagined and into unfamiliar, uncomfortable terrain. It is there, in those rugged places, that suffering and pain often become our unexpected companions.
Even those who teach, encourage, and write about faith are not exempt. There are days when doubt whispers, fear lingers, and worry fills the pages of our stories. The off-road places reveal what we often try to hide—that faith is not the absence of struggle, but the presence of God within it.
God never promised a life of ease. There was no guarantee of roads lined with comfort or days filled only with happiness. Instead, He points us toward a greater hope. He points us to a future where heaven’s streets are paved with gold, and we will walk with Jesus face to face —a reminder that what awaits us is far greater than what we endure.
Still, we forget. We forget that He told us life would sometimes be messy and hard.
Yet it is in the hard that something holy is formed.
Hard seasons build perseverance. They shape character. They deepen our dependence on Him. The valleys, the potholes, and the unexpected detours are not wasted—they are the very places where faith takes root and grows stronger.
Paul learned this lesson and, too, had developed off-road faith, the kind of faith that can travel the roads no matter how rocky and steep and still grow stronger. He describes it in Romans 5:3-5 (NIV) to give us hope and encouragement when we find ourselves on paths we never set out to tackle, leaving us with questions about why we are there.
“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”
There will be moments when life feels unfair. Moments when someone else’s life seems easier, lighter, more blessed. Moments when your prayers feel like they never rise beyond the ceiling.
But here is the quiet truth you can cling to: you have made it through every hard day so far.
Not by your own strength, but by His.
Even when you grumbled.
Even when you felt you couldn’t take another step.
Even when doubt clouded your vision.
Even when the weight felt unbearable—God made a way.
And in doing so, He accomplished exactly what He promised. He strengthened you. He shaped you into someone more resilient than you ever imagined.
Perhaps that is part of the purpose of the struggle. God is building women who can stand firm in uncertain times. He is equipping women who lead with wisdom, serve with humility, and endure with quiet strength. Women who carry the weight of life’s challenges and still press forward.
A woman like the one described in Proverbs 31—clothed not in outward beauty alone, but in strength, dignity, and grace.
When she enters a room, people notice. Not because of what she wears on the outside, but because of the presence of God within her.
She has walked through fire and flood.
She has endured the off-road seasons.
She has been tested—and refined.
And because of that, she will laugh at the days to come. (Proverbs 31:25)
Not because life is easy, but because she knows the One who walks with her through every road.
She has a quiet confidence because she knows she is loved and that she belongs to Him. At every unexpected turn, she has discovered this truth: along every road, her God was in every detail.
