A Covering Stitched with Love
Key Verse: “She is not afraid for her household when it snows, for all in her household are doubly clothed. She makes her own bed coverings; her clothing is fine linen and purple.” Proverbs 31: 21-22 (CSB) My husband’s grandparents were small town farmers. Their income came mostly from selling cows and through a crop of tobacco each year. According to today’s standards, they would have probably been described as poor. There was no big fine house in a subdivision and no shiny new cars in the driveway. The clothes they wore were often hand me downs and his grandmother probably never owned one designer bag her entire lifetime. What…

Finding True Meaning in the Meaningless
Key Verse: “Absolute futility,” says the Teacher. “Everything is futile.” Ecclesiastes 12:8 As I cleaned out the crisper drawer in my refrigerator, it reminded me how temporary and fleeting everything in life is. The fruit I placed in my refrigerator was crisp, firm, and full of flavor. Just a few days later it was wilted, brown, and no longer edible. A stark reminder that “everything is futile,” just as Solomon penned in Ecclesiastes 12:8. It also makes me stop to think how many things I have gotten so bent out of shape over things that didn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. Stuff I had worried about and stressed…

When You Feel Stuck and Need Relief
Sometimes life is hard. Circumstances can leave you feeling stuck and feeling like things will never change. If your situation is like mine, it has left you aching for relief. I discovered 5 lessons we can glean from Jeremiah 37 that will encourage us until our circumstances change for the better. Earlier this week I will be honest, I just felt empty. For a girl that most days surrounds herself with several bible commentaries, devotions, and bible studies, I honestly just pushed all of it aside. But, on this particular morning, I needed something a little more personal. I felt stuck in a certain situation and just needed to find some…

Waiting for Good
Key Verse: Isaiah 40:31 “but they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength: they shall mount up with wings of eagles; they shall run and not be weary: they shall walk and not faint.” Waiting in line. Waiting for my turn. Waiting to turn 18. Waiting to say “I do”. Waiting for the storm to pass. Waiting for the test results. Waiting till the leaves change. Waiting for my loved one to feel better. Waiting for my dad to take his last breath. Waits. Some are sad. Some are full of anticipation. Some we hope pass quickly. Some we hope they never end. No matter what your…

Signs Matter
Key Verse: “The wisdom of the prudent is to know their way.” Proverbs 14:8 (KJV) I did it again. I hung my All About Me sign on my door. It crookedly covered up the letters to my Everyone is Welcome sign. It wasn’t at all pretty. I’m not sure how long it had been hanging there and it took someone else to remind me to take it down. As I pulled through the drive thru line, I smiled when the young cashier handed me my order and told me there was no charge. The person in front of me had generously paid on my behalf. My mind was a whirl…

Have You Considered?
“Consider the ravens: They don’t sow or reap; they don’t have a storehouse or a barn; yet God feeds them.” Luke 12:24 (CSB) Consider….. I was stressed and worried so at a time like that why would God tell me to consider. Honestly, at a time like this it was hard to make a conscious effort to think “carefully about and believe”. I knew He was asking me to get still and it felt impossible to get still in the middle of all my stress. I admit that I’ve always been a stressor and worrier. People close to me already know this about me. I spend a lot of time…

Homemade “Gourmet” Potato Soup
Fall is my favorite season. I love all when the leaves start to change colors on the mountains around my house and the cool nip in the air. I enjoy decorating the house with all the oranges and gold colors and wearing big chunky sweaters. Put this together with a big cup of Pumpkin Spice coffee and a big bowl of my homemade “gourmet” potato soup, and this girl is in her happy place. There is just something about a big bowl of soup and the cool days of fall that hits the spot. One of my favorite soups is a simple recipe I picked up from a friend several years ago.…

The Power in Small Words
Key Verse: “Be strong and very courageous to observe carefully the whole instruction my servant Moses commanded you. Do not turn from it right or left, so that you will have success wherever you go.” Joshua 1:7 (CSB) But….. It is hard to believe just how much power a three letter word can hold over me. Power that I can at times freely give to it. I have been known to let it hover over me for days until I am unable to move forward. It weakens my faith and stirs my heart to question all the wonderful promises God has for me. As I read Joshua 1, I let my…

Jesus Visits Messy Houses
You get the TV and I will get the door. We then sat there in silence until the tapping on the door had stopped and we heard the car leave the driveway. In a few minutes, they were gone. We had pulled it off. We had made them think that we weren’t home. We now laugh about that incident with my mom. I can’t quite remember why she didn’t want that person to visit on that particular day. Perhaps she just wasn’t in the mood to talk or maybe she hadn’t had time to pick the clutter up. Whether you have ever gone to extremes to avoid company like my…

When You Can’t Do One More Thing
Key Verse: Father, if it be possible let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will. (Matthew 26:39) Lord, I do not want to do this….. Yes, that was my prayer. Have you ever prayed a prayer like me? I admit it didn’t seem like much of a prayer but honestly that was all the words I had left in me. Life and all my responsibilities that went with it just started to add up leaving me feeling completely overwhelmed. Overwhelmed and honestly….unwilling. Actually, a whole lot of unwillingness in my moment of weakness. That one more thing I had to do on my…
