Living Unbroken Book Review
Grief.
It comes in all different shapes and sizes. Different shades and colors. It doesn’t favor one person over another. It comes similar to rich or poor. The only thing it has in common among its participants is that it causes heart-shattering pain.
Dictionary.com (http://dictionary.com) describes it this way: “keen mental suffering or distress over affliction or loss; sharp sorrow; painful regret.” In a nutshell, it is a joy stealer. It can come on suddenly or begin to steal from you slowly. It can steal your sleep, your ability to eat, or even be at rest. It even wreaks havoc on your peace of mind.
I used to think grief only occurred when someone had physically died. I’m not a stranger to that kind of grief, and neither is my sweet mom. My mom is still suffering from grief almost two years after losing my dad to cancer. She still misses him as much today as the day dad left us for Heaven. In my current season, I am learning grief sometimes disguises its appearance just slightly so you won’t recognize it.
Tracie Miles talks about grief in her new book Living Unbroken: Reclaiming Your Life and Your Heart after Divorce. She humbly shares her pain and struggles along her unexpected journey through loneliness, PTSD attacks, depression, and grief, all brought on by divorce. In addition, she shares how difficult a divorce can be because you are grieving over a person that hasn’t died but is still alive.
I’m learning that grief is grief, and loss is a loss no matter what situation has caused it. The feeling of pain is the same. I’m also learning you can also grieve over what was familiar. As my husband’s diagnosis with Multiple Sclerosis continues to steal more and more of his physical ability, it takes with his bits and pieces of our familiar life. We are constantly changing to new normals that I honestly don’t like. I grieve over days that were easier and more carefree. I also grieve over things we can no longer do together and over places we can no longer go and enjoy.
Despite the pain of grief, Traci shares the importance of not succumbing to hopelessness or despair in her new book. Grief is indeed a process to work through, but Jesus always provides hope to endure the process. Traci writes in her book,
“Grief is a painful season to endure, but the healing process must play out. It cleanses our souls from anguish and is the process God can use to help us arrive at a place of healing and wholeness.”
God has promised to use everything we go through for good, and this book unpacks evidence to prove it can happen. She demonstrates what it looks like to Live Unbroken after your heart has been shattered into a million pieces.
Traci wrote this book while actually going through the pain of her divorce. She humbly shares her grief and heartbreak. She walks you through the heartbreak, through the disappointments and frustrations of everything she went through. Then, through “happiness promoters,” Traci’s own healing steps and tips in “caring for you,” she personally walks her reader through the pain and struggle of divorce and grief into a place of healing and wholeness.
I have been blessed to have been part of Traci Miles launch team for this incredible book. Even though I have not gone through a divorce, this book has encouraged me and inspired me to walk through my own current season of grief. It is a must-read for anyone suffering through loss and pain.

I can’t wait to read her book. I still need to order it. Being familiar with grief from death/loss, I also learned about the other reasons of grief. When my oldest moved to college, I grieved. When family relationships failed, I grieved. When my husband leaves for work every year across the country, I grieve. Sometimes it feels like all I do is grieve. But it truly is vital in order to heal. Great review, Susan.

This is one book that was so easy to review, Rochelle. I participated in the book launch because of people I know who have suffered through a divorce and I wanted to better understand what they have went through. The book ended up encouraging me. I do hope you can read. Even though the book’s main focus is divorce, there is so much within the pages to encourage through any type of grief and loss. I will forever recommend this book to any suffering divorce of grieving. Appreciate your comments.
