Friday Fall Favorites

Apple Dumplings

My deck is parked right in front of a beautiful mountain view.  I love watching the leaves change colors in the fall.  It is probably one of my favorite things about fall aside from apple desserts. Personally, there is just something about the taste and smell of apples cooking on a crisp evening that makes me love fall weather.  Recently, I came across a new recipe for Apple Dumplings that I just had to share.

Over the years, my family has enjoyed my Mom’s fried apple pies and considered them one of our favorite apple recipes.  My dad especially loved them, and a plate of her famous pies never lasted long in Mom’s kitchen.  So I was surprised to find a recipe that runs close to my Mom’s famous pies.

I came across this delicious delight in a cookbook I had ordered from one of my favorite Facebook personas Mama Sue’s Southern Kitchen. (https://www.facebook.com/mamasuessouthernkitchenThis sweet lady named Mama Sue is every bit as much a gem as her recipes.  She is a retired school teacher, and her charm and love for Jesus shine through on every cooking segment she does.  I have not tried a recipe I haven’t liked yet.  Plus, each recipe is super easy, and most of them don’t require a ton of ingredients, especially the ones you have never heard of before.

Please consider praying for this sweet lady.  She is currently battling cancer. Also, be sure to visit her website and order a cookbook.  You will be glad you did.

I prepared this recipe to go with my Autumn Pork Chops https://ruth216girl.com/autumn-cider-pork-chops, and the two were a perfect pair.  I hope you enjoy these as much as my family. It is one recipe I plan to make often and not just during the fall season.

Ingredients:

Two cans Crescent Rolls

2 Granny Smith Apples

Two sticks butter

1 1/2 cups sugar

1 tsp. vanilla

1 – 12 oz. can Mt. Dew

Peel and core apples.  Cut each apple into eight slices.  Roll each apple slice in a section of the Crescent rolls.

Place in a 9 x 13 buttered pan.  Then melt butter, add sugar and barely stir.  Add vanilla and pour the entire mixture over apples.  Pour Mt. Dew all around the edges of the apples.

Bake at 350 degrees for 40 minutes.

Take out of the oven and Enjoy!!!

See you in the field and the kitchen,

Susan Davidson

These ingredients are very different from what I am used to in California–what we call California cuisine. When I saw the title apple dumplings I had a completely different idea. The differences in different regions of the US just reinforce the importance of understanding cultural practices in Biblical times when interpreting Scripture. Once I was at a little cafe in a rural area of Northern California and witnessed the baker pouring orange soda into a peach pie…people traveled quite a distance for a piece of that pie! So, Mt. Dew just might be a good addition!

Thank you for your feedback and comment. I am generally not a Mt. Dew drinker myself, but I couldn’t resist the urge to try this. I am so glad I did. This recipe is delicious. Let me know if you try it!
